The motor show in Frankfurt last month was dominated by electric cars. It will be some time before we see a lot of near silent electric cars on our roads.

Unfortunately there is actually only one vehicle, the Mitsubishe MIEV supermini, that is close to becoming readily available. A Government sponsored trial is about to commence with 25 drivers using the MIEV daily on British roads.

The MIEV road test was enormously over subscribed with some 3,000 drivers applying to take part. Interest is so great that Mitsubishi have ordered a further 500 vehicles for 2010.

There is so much confidence in this model that both Peugeot and Citroen have signed agreements to sell the electric motors with their badges on them.

One of the most outstanding and appealing features of the MIEV supermini is economy. At standard electricity rates it costs just 96p (about $1.6) to fully charge the battery. A fully charged battery will enabley the MIEV to travel between 80 and 100 miles. This makes the MIEV capable of an incredible 12,000 miles for about £115 ($183).

Another feature of the MIEV that will often turn heads is how quiet it is. This has been raised as a road safety concern by some groups including advocates for the blind, children, pedestrians and the elderly.

Many people who have never driven an electric car expect something close to the performance of a milk float or golf buggy. But the MIEV is actually capable of a top speed of about 87mph. which is easily fast enough for UK roads. But travelling at speed will soon run down the battery.

It certainly looks like the future for cars is electric. The future looks like our roads will be full of silent, battery powered cars plugging into lamp posts to refuel on cheap electricity.
